Mayoral Proclamation

Declaring June 14, 2008 as
Reading is Fundamental Day in Takoma Park

WHEREAS, Reading Is Fundamental (RIF), the nation's oldest and largest children's and familyliteracy organization, strives to inspire passion for reading and learning through
innovative literacy programs and services; and

WHEREAS, RIF makes reading fun through exciting motivational activities that culminate in
book distributions which provide opportunities for children to choose and keep
books at no cost to them or their families; and

WHEREAS, RIF provides books to children through a network of local volunteers who organize events; and

WHEREAS, since its founding in 1966, RIF has distributed more than 250 million books for
children, serving children from preschool through high school in all 50 states, the
District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and Guam; and

WHEREAS, the Beginning the Journey Chapter of Reading is Fundamental is holding its first
book distribution fair on June 14, 2008 in Takoma Park.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRUCE R. WILLIAMS, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF TAKOMA
PARK, MARYLAND,
do hereby declare June 14, 2008 as Reading is Fundamental (RIF) Day in Takoma Park in support of the efforts of the Beginning the Journey Chapter of Reading is
Fundamental.
