One of the best joys for me as a parent is when my daughters eagerly wait for our bedtime story reading session. Since they have been exposed to reading and books from a very early age they get great pleasure from these sessions and look forward to them nightly.
Introducing children to books from an early age impacts all areas of their lives especially their ability to understand and process language. My five year old daughter began first grade at a Chinese immersion school this past September and her transition to their curriculum has been seamless due to this exposure.
Each week the students create their own spelling list for their weekly quiz and to my astonishment one of the words was astronaut. Initially, I thought this word would be difficult to learn however to my great amazement my daughter already knew how to spell astronaut due to us owning a children's picture dictionary at home. This further reinforced to me the advantages of early exposure to reading and the importance of making it a part of our daily routine.
