Out of Many, One People

Yesterday, our family celebrated the 49th independence of our beloved Jamaica at the Organization of the American States in Washington, DC.

We enjoyed authentic Jamaican drinks such as cola champagne, Malta and coconut water and nibbled on plaintain chips which were sponsored by Grace products and Digicel. We then feasted on curry goat, eschovich fish, oxtail and stewed chicken acquired from local vendors on hand. The food was reminiscent of "mother's cooking" with a touch of each cook's individual secret additives.

Live music was played by numerous bands and Jamaican actor's entertained the audience with brief stage plays.

From the out pouring of Jamaicans in attendance it was obvious of how proud everyone was to be a "yardie" dressed in their yellow, green, black with splashes of red sprinkled in. We were no exception to this rule. My girls and husband blended in perfectly since our family embodies the Jamaican motto of "out of many one people" due to the vast diversity of the country's population .

Hopefully, next year when we attend the 50th independence day celebration I will be the first Jamaican born Mrs. Maryland International.
