Washington, DC, February 25, 2010—More than 1500 children throughout the Washington, DC metropolitan area celebrated the Reading is Fundamental (RIF®) mission by participating in activities sponsored by the Beginning the Journey chapter of Reading Is Fundamental (RIF®).

This interactive program allows children the opportunity to participate in a minimum of five events that build a love of reading while creating their own home libraries.

Through the book ownership program children are allowed to sift through hundreds of books, share them with their friends and ultimately chose one book (per event) to keep at no cost to them or their families. All of this is enhanced by including special celebrity guest readers, scavenger hunts, author appreciation celebrations and other age appropriate activities that ensure that the participant is excited to participate in future Reading Is Fundamental (RIF®) activities.

“"That was such a wonderful event this morning, thank you!! I can't tell you how excited our students were to be taking home their new books this afternoon. One of our PreK students asked me this morning if they would have to bring their books back to school, and when I said that they could keep them, they cheered!",” said Sarah Harris, Principal of Washington Yu Ying Public Charter School.

The Beginning the Journey chapter of Reading Is Fundamental (RIF®) is recruiting for its 2010 participants. This RIF initiative will help children understand that reading is both fun and critical to success in life. Our RIF activities highlight students’ literacy achievements and encourage them to become lifetime readers by building self-esteem and involving the most important people in their lives—parents, community members and other children —in the learning process.
We are currently accepting applicants between the ages of 4-8 who are interested in the rewards of becoming proficient readers. Space is extremely limited and only the first 100 children who sign-up will be eligible for the 2010 program. Please contact Peta-Gay Lewis at info@beginningthejourney.com to sign your child up.

Reading Is Fundamental, Inc., prepares and motivates children to read by delivering free books and literacy resources to those families who need them most.
