Black History Month

As a student growing up in a predominantly black Washington, DC February and the months leading up to it encompassed teachers spearheading projects that emphasized the achievements of African-Americans, Africans and Caribbeans to make their pupils aware of how much "our ancestors" accomplished.

During my younger years we participated in Assembly programs where we role played as historical figures and watched documentaries. As I got older the highlight for me thought was the annual Black History Bee that was sponsored by local McDonald's franchises. I would practice months in advance for these "It's Academics" type contests. I remember in 8th grade my team won the competition. I was soooo proud of my contribution in securing our big win. It will forever be a memory I cherish.

As I have gotten older I realize that the exchange of cultural knowledge should be done daily to build self-esteem, acceptance and tolerance within our society and not just celebrated one month out of the year. Let's make every month "cultural heritage month" by opening your heart and minds to the beauty of diversity.
